Background

Yelena Belova doesn't know her biological parents. She has no idea where she comes from or how she ended up in the Red Room.
Her first memories were in Ohio with her family, this family was created when Lena was 3 and lasted up until she was 6. She grew up believing that Natasha, Alexei and Melina were her real family; going so far as to praying every night in her training that one of them would come and rescue her.
When it became clear that she wasn't going to get rescued, Lena tried to escape herself. That became impossible when Natasha escaped the regime. Dreykov and his goons would place Lena and others under chemical subjugation; she was awake but trapped in her head while her body was forced to kill - like a puppet with strings.
She finally escaped when a mission went wrong and she was given the antidote to the chemical subjugation. This lead to her wanting to free her sisters and take down the Red Room once and for all.
Now Yelena spends her time exploring the world, trying new foods and taking missions with the Thunderbolts and paying customers.

SOLOs

When I was younger, I always used to say that I would never end up this way. That’s what Lena would always tell herself. When she was six and she feared the monster under her bed; when she was four and she couldn’t sleep without a light on; she swore she would never be the reason little girls couldn’t go to bed at night. That was until she got taken. Snatched away from her family, from her safe space, from the only love she had ever known. That was ten years ago. Little Lena. The girl who was always upside down, always singing her favourite song. Now she’s the girl with the highest kill count. The soldier with the steel face. The one who can survive the torture the longest. Ten years of being locked up. The Red Room, they call it and Lena always wondered if that was because of all the blood that had been shed. So much blood it drenched the walls, soaked the floors. She used to be so scared of blood, the smallest little cut and Yelena would be in floods of tears. Desperate for her mommy. Pain only makes us stronger; she’d say while she shushed her and stroked away her tears. Some days, when her cell is quiet and the night is dark, Lena can still feel the ghost of knuckles on her cheek. It is the only thing that has kept her alive for ten long, lonely years. It’s always the same. Wake up at the crack of dawn, meet outside to run around the base, then it’s the armoury to train on yet another gun. Every day the same. Wake, run, shoot. Sun, cold, blood. Again, and again. The never-ending march of the drum. Days blend into months, blend into years. Yelena wasn’t even certain that it had been ten years since she got taken in broad daylight from her family; sure, she’s taller now, maybe a little plumper than she was as on that day, but she would know if ten years had gone by, right? She wouldn’t forget?
Everything was the same until it wasn’t. On the Forth of June, 2008 there was no training, no running endless miles, no blood. The clock seemed to stop. Yelena can remember that day. It was a Wednesday, the canteen served them a bowl of rice and a solid, hard slice of bread. But for some reason whenever she tries to remember why they didn’t train, her mind goes fuzzy. She develops a headache and those pretty, little lights dance in front of her eyes.
Nothing was the same after that. They still had the routine of course, wake; run; train. But this time, every so often a few girls would disappear from their little group. Only a few each time, barely noticeable. But Lena noticed. She’d been trained to notice the things nobody else seems to. That’s how she found herself sneaking out of her cell one night, sticking to the wall and following the faint sounds of beeping. Beep. Beep. Beep.Carefully, Yelena slipped past the walls of plastic separating her from the secrets of this organisation. Inside the dank, make shift hospital bay Lena found answers. Rows and rows of hospital beds. Most filled with girls her age. All attached to various drips; red, thick liquid flowing into their veins. Some girls are asleep, some seem catatonic, one girl is scratching desperately at the place where medical equipment meets flesh. Yelena takes a few measured steps towards a bed; picking up the file at the base of it. Reams and reams of notes. The times and dates of various dosages of Agent C21; reactions to it, if it was successful or if the patient died. They weren't patients; they were test subjects. Rats in a cage. But Lena had no idea what they were testing or why.A low whine is what caught Lena’s attention first. Then the shape of a shadow cast over her. She turned around just in time to see him.
Dreykov.
That’s when everything went black.Stinging green eyes cracked open slowly, studying the room around her. Rough, textured walls; a light swinging above her; a sparkling silver tray in front of her, just out of reach. She tried to move her arms but they felt so heavy. Everything did. Lena felt dosed up, but it was more than all the other times. Each time she was sent away for testing, not once did it end up like this. Perhaps Dreykov was finally going to put her out of her misery? She heard a vicious laugh echoing from the corner. A blurry shadow stepping into focus. “You know what to do,” the voice said. Lena recognised that voice, somewhere, in her mind. If she could just concentrate enough to grab the wisps of the memory. “Feed her the serum. And try not to kill her, she's the best we’ve got.” The voice of her master said before a big heavy door opened and slammed shut without much care. Yelena wincing as the sound went straight through her aching bones. It took her a New York minute to realise that she wasn’t alone in the room. She thought it was just her and the Voice in the water damaged room, but another shadow moves into her field of vision and Lena lets out a quick sigh. Right. She’s heard about this. The Hole. The widows get threatened with it all the time. A place where girls go in but nobody ever leaves. Sometimes, when Lena is running her laps around the compound, she hears screams. Real, painful, haunting screams. The kind that seems to go on forever, but try as she might she's never found the location of those screams. Joke’s on her now huh?
The man, well, creature, looked awfully smug as he took a step up to that shiny table Lena noticed minutes ago. He starts to pick up a few different tools, examining them before placing them delicately back into their spot. One after the other. Lena has seen them before, she has even been taught how to use them. It isn’t nearly as much fun when the shoe is on the other foot. If only she could move her hands. Lazy eyes move away from the creature to her arms. Each is strapped down, a series of wires and tubes littering her skin. Even though her head was pounding, she still had enough brain power to notice that same red liquid from earlier slowly making its way into her veins. Was that making her sleepy and confused or was it something else? Maybe that nasty bump on her head?
Mr Creature seems particularly infatuated with a pair of pristine silver pliers, and Yelena just knows that this is going to hurt. Sure, the Voice said not to kill her, but he didn’t say she couldn’t be a little roughed up first. Pain makes us stronger. That is the only thing that kept Lena alive through the next five hours. Even when her veins felt like they were going to burst. Even when her brain felt so cloudy she wasn’t sure if she passed out or not. Especially when she felt her mind fracture and her soul scream out.
Luckily Mister Creature seemed to get bored quite easily when Yelena didn’t cry out at his torture. He had her carried off to her cell, body bruised and bandaged up. But the real damage was in her mind. She didn’t know which way was up, which her was the real her. Fully conscious but completely out of control.Dreykov’s weapon. Under his complete control.
